Troubleshooting Home Washing Machine Problems

Will not start
  • Door/lid not fully or properly closed - some newer machines have safety switches
  • Button may not be fully pushed; dial may not be exactly set
  • Water supply valves may be turned off
  • Machine is unplugged
  • Circuit breaker may be tripped, fuse may be blown
Water does not flow into machine
  • Door/lid not fully or properly closed - some newer machines have safety switches
  • Water supply valves may be turned off
  • Kink in hose; loose wiring
  • Inlet valve screen clogged
Water too hot, too cold
  • Washer temperature controls not set properly
  • Hot or cold water valve may be shut off
  • Hot/cold water hoses attached opposite (hot inlet to cold water hose & cold inlet to hot water hose)
  • Hot water heater not working
Machine will not spin
  • Door/lid not fully or properly closed - some newer machines have safety switches
  • Load not properly balanced - re-arrange the load
Machine vibrates
  • Not leveled correctly, adjust using level and washer's leveling legs
  • Load not properly balanced - re-arrange the load
Will not drain
  • Kink in drain hose
  • Clogged drain hose or drain
  • Too many suds (add cold water to washer and remove suds with pail)
Water leaking from door/lid
  • Check gasket for cracks, breaks or deterioration
  • Gasket (or porcelain clamp) improperly aligned.
  • Door/lid out of alignment
