When making emergency and survival plans - don't overlook planning what you need to carry in your automobile. Having your vehicle prepared can be very important should you have to evacuate your home quickly or if you get stranded on the road. The following are some items to consider carrying in your car, truck and even your boat.

  • Mylar blankets - these are made of similar material similar to the party balloons. These blankets are designed to hold in 90%+ of body heat and are available in various sizes.
  • Basic First Aid Kit w/Medicines
  • Flashlight or LED Lantern
  • Bottled water
  • Pre-packaged, non-perishable foods
  • Car repairs items (Electrical tape, coolant, etc.)
  • Flat Tire Filler (pressurized), Spare Tire, Car-jack
  • Jumper Cables
  • Basic Tools (Hammer, screwdrivers (2 types), pliers, etc.)
  • Way to start fire (Waterproof matches, cigarette lighter)
  • Flares
  • Hats, dry clothing, socks
  • Adapter to power/charge mobile phone and GPS while driving

Other items to consider are:

  • Spare Shoes, Boots
  • Rain Gear
  • Fold-up Shovel
  • Back Pack

Not every situation will require you have all of these items, and some may find their circumstances need additional emergency items for children, pets or a family member with medical needs. Of course, any vehicle you plan on using in an emergency should always be in good running order with a near-full tank of gas. Planning ahead can mean minutes saved should you find yourself needing to leave in a hurry.
